In-Store Access & Countertops

Everything should be placed up in a clear, easy-to-access arrangement after your visitors have entered the business. Display cases should be well-lit, labeled, and placed near to the ground. Wheelchairs should be able to fit through doorways, and your store’s throughways should be large enough to comfortably fit utilitarian items and provide consumers with extra space to feel comfortable. The checkout area should also be easily accessible and spacious enough to accommodate wheelchairs and other utility goods.

Company Language & Store Signage

Everything in your store, from items to bathrooms and exits, should be well marked. Make sure that any signage or company policy that mentions individuals with disabilities utilize person-first language. The phrase “person with a disability” should be used instead of “handicapped person”. Disabilities aren’t a bad thing, and they shouldn’t be labeled as such. Disabilities should not be framed as a handicap in terms of language. People who use wheelchairs should not be thought of as “bound,” and people with various physical disabilities should not be thought of as “suffering” from their situation.

Employee Education

Training your employees on how to properly engage and inform people with a range of disabilities is probably the most critical thing you can arrange for making your dispensary more accessible to people with disabilities. Your employees’ treatment of disabled customers will be the most defining feature of their experience, and it must be positive. People with disabilities are frequently treated unfairly, given insufficient consideration, and spoken to as though they are second-class citizens.
